Maine State Visitor Information Center - Kittery: Reviews
Fantastic experience: So good to be back, feet on the ground in MAINE! 31 days out and back to Phoenix! So glad to live in Maine.
Negative experience: Zero brochures for anything related to Wabanaki community in this state.
Thank you for your feedback. The Visitor Information Center is operated by a non-profit organization, and the brochures inside are provided by their respective businesses and organizations, mostly accommodations, attractions, restaurants, museums, and destination regions and towns. While we can see that visitors utilize printed brochures, many businesses and organizations are relying on digital resources to save on print costs. We do produce the Official State Highway Map and the official Maine travel planner, Maine Invites You. You'll find information about the history and culture of the Wabanaki peoples in Maine Invites You (page 53 of the 2024 edition). The Travel Counselors who staff the Visitor Information Center are extensively trained in the history and culture of the Wabanaki Nations, and in the destinations in Maine where visitors can go to learn more. The Abbe Museum, with locations in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, is dedicated to Wabanaki history and culture, and is Maine's only Smithsonian affiliate. We recommend the Abbe Museum (and other places dedicated to Wabanaki history, culture, products, etc.) to visitors, and while the museum doesn't provide us with brochures, they are featured on our website for visitors. If you are interested, I'd love to share the portions of the Travel Counselor Training covering the Wabanaki peoples with you to get your feedback. My name is Jane and you can call or stop by the Visitor Information Center during the week to reach me. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. It is important to me and to the Maine Tourism Association that we are knowledgable and prepared to share information on Maine's indigenous peoples with visitors.
Negative experience: After stopping to rest and realizing we left a phone on a some guy said maybe ring the doorbell that sometimes the night person is there. So did that a few times with no luck. And not sure the time but my brother got out to stretch after we decided to rest and wait said someone went in and out to a garage. So he went to ask about the phone and out comes a guy swearing no one aloud there no phone note on the desk that one of our friends in another car has it by now. So just want the him to know it was found by someone and mailing it to us. Don't be so judge.
Good morning, Karen. The Visitor Information Center closes at 5:30p. Custodial staff clean the spaces outside the Information Center (restrooms, vending building) after hours. I spoke with the custodial staff on duty when I arrived this morning, and no one on duty overnight matches the description in your review. Please give me a call so I may get a better understanding of your experience and to confirm that you were able to find your phone. Thank you. - Jane Anderson, Visitor Information Center Manager. Fantastic experience: Nice clean place to find brochures, stretch, and relieve oneself.
Fantastic experience: Clean, convenient rest stop with restroom facilities.
Fantastic experience: One of the cleanest state visitor centers I've ever seen! The employees were very helpful and passionate about different things to do in Maine. There's also very clean restrooms and lots of snack vending machines as well. Definitely worth your stop if you need a break from driving.
Fantastic experience: Clean bathrooms! A great place to stop when you're out !on the road
Fantastic experience: Employees are very friendly and keep everything very clean despite scumbag people trashing the toilets and the sinks. Thank you to all the employees
Fantastic experience: Customer service rep very friendly & helpful.
Thank you for your feedback!
Negative experience: Rest rooms are fine. Nice to have dog friendly areas. The only refreshments offered are through vending machines, in a different building from the rest rooms. That would be okay, except every single offering is pure junk. No juice, no milk, no ordinary nuts, no dried fruit. I’m not asking for health food, just not junk! The only offering that isn’t junk is water, and there must be 20 or so different varieties of water. Really? Ugh!
Thank you for your feedback. The vending building is a different tenant...The Visitor Information Center doesn't oversee the vending choices. We will pass along your feedback to the appropriate organization. Thanks again!
Fantastic experience: Very pretty, a nice welcome home! Also, thank you very much for the free postcards!!
Fantastic experience: Good place to take a break from driving.
Fantastic experience: Clean place to stop and use the restroom or get info about the state. And they sell lottery tickets.
Thank you for your review and the lovely photo!
Fantastic experience: Had to bring relatives up this way, and it was 10ish pm, and the children needed a potty break. Bathrooms were extremely clean, and I was impressed. The store part was closed , and we didn't need anything, but overall, it was fantastic!
Negative experience: 0ct 16 2024 4:30 - 5:15 am Positively shameful. First, we stopped for a bathroom break - instead we got to witness a nasty, hate filled female cleaner (with a limp) harassing a senior citizen as she was entering the handicapped bathroom. She was telling the woman she was not handicapped because she could walk. The older woman absolutely should NOT have had to explain that she has a heart condition & can get dizzy when she goes to stand up. The cleaner continued to make nasty remarks as the woman ignored her & used the bathroom with the safety bars. Second, we were parked at the back entrance to the rest stop. As we were preparing to leave by the exit to Kittery south 95 - a red pickup truck came speeding in. It was driving (speeding) on the wrong side of the road with its blinding high beams on. If we had pulled out of our space 10 seconds earlier - we would have been in a full head on collision. We watched the red pickup truck fly past us at 4:58 am. To utter shock it flew into the private employee parking lot. The driver got out & tried to stare us down as he realized we had witnessed his "entrance". Before we left - we spoke to some other witnesses & were told these two people are well known for their behaviors. We listened to examples of other disturbing behaviors by these two. The thing about this is people do what they know they can get away with. So shame on Maine for tolerating them. Because what you tolerate - you teach. Today should the last day of work for both of these people.
We're sorry to hear this. Thank you for letting us know about your experience. If you'd like to discuss this situation further, please reach out to us at (207) 623-0363.

Fantastic experience: Always very clean, including the restrooms. Pleasant staff, with lots of information about Maine. If you can't find parking in front, continue around to the back side, where you will find ample space.
Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Great visitor center, but the best part of it was meeting John! He was so friendly and incredibly helpful. He spent tons of time with us helping to plan our trip and the best route for our RV to see the things we were interested in and sent us on our way with tons of information about the state and the places we wanted to visit. We were so impressed. Every state should have a welcoming committee like John! :)
Fantastic experience: The kind gentleman working the visitor center gave us the kindest welcome to Maine of all time when I told him I was looking for ibuprofen for my wife on our road trip. He "hooked us up" in his own words! Thank you to an excellent representative of the state of Maine.
Fantastic experience: Always great introduction to Maine with friendly staff, lots of info and clean restrooms
Fantastic experience: It's a great resting place and very clean.
Fantastic experience: Very clean. Lots of parking.
Fantastic experience: I love the small town of Unity, ME. Practically everything you need can be found here in the village center. There is a pretty big, well stocked and affordably priced friendly, efficiently staffed Supermarket with plenty of parking. We enjoyed the food at the Chinese restaurant, that only does take out now. I was happy to find a shared branching Credit Union at Downeast Credit Union! Very friendly, efficient tellers! Love it! Family Dollar helped us outfit a friends new low income, elderly housing condo at Leisure Court. There is a great hardware store, Dunkin Donuts, Aroma Joe's, more places to eat, a Race Track (cars), a laundromat, a small train station. I love 2 lane, quiet, little towns like Unity, where there are many well marked cross walks and you can slow down and greet friendly passerbys. I also like how flat, and walkable the town is!
Fantastic experience: This is our favorite stop from NY to Maine. It has a wealth of information for the State of Maine. Also great photo op with a giant lobster trap!

Fantastic experience: John was great. Best visitor center EVER!
Positive experience: Clean & welcoming. Other than bathroom & tourist info there didn't seem to be a lot here.

Fantastic experience: Great parking. Clean restrooms and food options.
Fantastic experience: One of the best I've been at. Nice to just stop and rest. I never seen another like it.
Fantastic experience: What an excellent example of what Maine can be. Lots of parking, wooded picnic areas, clean accommodations. It was so inviting, I chose to eat my lunch there rather than eat on the go. I'll probably make this a regular stop just to adjust my mind to "Maine, the way life ought to be."
Fantastic experience: Clean big bathrooms large display of maps and free travel guides.
Positive experience: Dark, sketchy at night. Visions of axe murderer hiding in bathroom. Yeah NO. Daylight ok when visitor center is open, otherwise I would want to be armed...Just cccrreeeeeppppy dark..
Fantastic experience: The lady and gentleman at the Maine State Visitor Center were some of the nicest people we met on our trip. They made us feel very welcomed and gave us bags, postcards and maps. The main building has many brochures and posters about attractions and stores in the state of Maine. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked. Spotless, twinkling clean, great building with a Maine vibe, terrific oversized reference map, lots of pine cones on the ground for collecting. After after 40 years of driving up here, I stop here just for the fun of it.

Fantastic experience: Was a little lost and they gave great directions.. the only issue was they were not up to date with some info.. telling us that we need to buy parking passes to go to Cadillac Mountain which Cleary stated on the web site that u don't after oçt 22
We appreciate your feedback. I apologize for not catching the change in status at Cadillac Mountain during your visit. We work hard to stay abreast of changing conditions. We hope you enjoyed your trip and that you'll visit Maine again.

Fantastic experience: Very beautiful welcome center. Bathrooms are good maintenance, but not many food options though. the location it self is beautiful great welcome to the Maine state.
Fantastic experience: The people are very friendly and patiently introduced us to a shortcut to kittery trading post.
Fantastic experience: Very handy off the highway very clean good parking and info, bathrooms were good.
Fantastic experience: Great visitors center. Nice and clean, and it had friendly people manning the visitors desk. A LOT of information available and real paper maps of the State available for free.
Negative experience: Don’t stop if you need a drink. I was in a hurry and didn’t really have time to stop, but I was really thirsty and decided to get something from a vending machine. BIG MISTAKE. The machines don’t take cash, so you need a credit card. The machine that had the Gatorade wouldn’t accept my card either by tap or by swipe. So I tried another machine, and it worked, so I punched the number for an Arizona Iced Tea. The little elevator went up and got the tea, but then went down and got a Snapple, which I did not order, nor would it fit in the already-occupied elevator. The Snapple crashed about the other drinks as the elevator dragged it around the machine. Ultimately the Snapple got knocked loose and knocked the Arizona Iced Tea out of the car, leaving them both on the floor of the machine and me with nothing to drink. But the machine did make sure to charge me for both drinks that I didn’t get. The attendant at the rest area said they couldn’t do anything about it, and I would have to call the posted phone number. I called it and got a recording. Just AVOID THE VENDING MACHINES and go on to a filling station and buy a drink from a human.
I’m sorry for your experience with the vending machines, Will. The Travel Counselor inside the Visitor Information Center was correct…The vending building is a different tenant and we have no access to their machines or their payment system. The Travel Counselor should have offered you the number for the correct organization to call for a refund…I hope that was offered. They are usually quick to get back with a resolution. I will also reach out to let them know which machines were not working properly so they can address any necessary repairs. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: Large rest area. Considering the amount of visitors the bathrooms are pretty clean. They have a little shed with vending machines. The coffee vending machine was not working correctly but took my money anyway. They really should have a second coffee machine if they want to help sleepy drivers!
Fantastic experience: Love checking out visitors centers.
Fantastic experience: Nice welcome center! Clean bathrooms, cute displays for picture taking and they even had tastings of wild blueberries to take. We definitely felt welcomed to the State of Maine!
Thank you for your feedback. We hope you've enjoyed your visit!
Fantastic experience: Loved this center. They not only had restrooms but they had brochures for every town in Maine. Big plus was the giant lobster trap for pictures that kids and adults loved
Fantastic experience: Clean, air conditioned, kind, helpful and friendly workers. There is so much information here to help you enjoy Maine. The outside grounds were mowed and there were picnic tables. Our family enjoyed the clean bathrooms, fun travel information, water for our water bottles and the shaded picnic tables.
Thanks for your feedback and we hope you'll visit again!
Fantastic experience: Clean and well organized. Plenty of information brochures and actual people to direct you to your destination. Clean and well maintained restrooms. Even a couple family restrooms. Plenty of parking. Picnic tables. Dog walking area.
Positive experience: Solid rest stop, super pet-friendly with good bathrooms and they sell lotto tickets. You can use the back exit to reverse direction off 95 too.
Fantastic experience: I've driven by this visitor center a hundred times, but never stopped before. We were on our way to a family vacation in Maine and the kids really needed to use the bathroom. The bathrooms here are very clean and easy to find. There are also plenty of opportunities to take fun photos, and the staff was very helpful in providing us with information about things to do in the area. We ended up staying at the visitor center for about 30 minutes and picked up a bunch of information booklets. Overall, I would definitely recommend stopping at the Maine State Visitor Information Center in Kittery if you're looking for a place to use the bathroom, get some information, or take some photos.
Thanks so much, Eric! We look forward to your next visit!
Positive experience: Nice rest stop with clean restrooms and visitor center. I was able to find some nice free travel brochures and an area map. They have already come in handy. The building was pretty and looked very appropriate for Maine. There were large parking spots to fit our RV. It was easy to get back on the highway.
Positive experience: Great rest area with plenty of free maps and information. The bathrooms are outdated but we’re fairly clean.
Fantastic experience: THE nicest rest area I've seen in the U.S. Super clean and well maintained inside and outside - huge kudos and thanks to the crew who obviously works very hard to keep it that way. Impressive!
Thanks so much for your kind feedback!
Fantastic experience: A very nice and clean information center with some nice displays to look at. It can be accessed from both I-95 and US-1.
