Gates of the Mountains, Inc.: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Very hood experience..the gentleman driving the Boston was a great storyteller!
Fantastic experience: Great boat adventure up the canyon. Our guide was knowledgeable of the area. He grew up in the area and was happy to share his knowledge.
Fantastic experience: Such a pretty area!!
Fantastic experience: We enjoyed the Gates of the Mountains boat tour ! The captain and tour guide presented great amounts of nature information, local history and personal experiences of all that we were shown.
Positive experience: Was there Saturday September 7th. Beautiful boat ride except for smoke and raw sewage smell in the evening. Anyone else notice this? Why does it smell like raw sewage in the Canyon between Gates of the Mountains Marina and Holter Lake?
Fantastic experience: Very nice and informative guide in our trip on the. Missouri River
Fantastic experience: Great boat tour. I have been through the gates of the mountains several times and boated right past some cool things that the tour guide pointed out. Awesome trip!
Fantastic experience: Good experience.. kids think it's boring.. the adults enjoyed
Fantastic experience: Amazing beautiful
Fantastic experience: Excellent boat captain/story teller/historical describer
Fantastic experience: An absolute delight! Beautiful breathtaking. Boat captain shared great history!!!
Fantastic experience: We opted for the historical boat trip through the gorge and down the river and it was an absolute wonderful time. In all the trip takes approximately 2 hours one hour down and one hour back as the tour guide shows all the amazing sites and Flora and fauna, the native American history, the fires, it's all there. Very educational and family friendly.
Positive experience: We enjoyed it so much my grandson fell asleep on boat! Great memory
Fantastic experience: 10 stars actually. The lady of the Sac did a great job!! I'd do this tour again anytime!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic tour! Skip was a great guide! Beautiful day, I highly recommend this trip.
Fantastic experience: Great experience.... sit at the back of the boat, outside, to get a better picture of what is going on.
Fantastic experience: Kari was a wonderful captain and guide. The tour was fun and informative. Highly recommend this tour!
Fantastic experience: We were visiting from Maryland and decided to go on this boat tour. It is one of our favorite things from this trip!!! We went on the Sacajawea II and the reviews are right, no shade, no break from the sun but the most amazing views and pictures you could imagine. Definitely worth it!! The captain was prepared and offered water or ice packs if needed, definitely bring water with you if it’s a super hot and sunny day!!! This boat doesn’t have a bathroom and takes a break partway through the tour and you are able to stretch your legs and see the Mann Gulch Fire memorial which is amazing to see. Our captain/guide was amazing and told us so many things about the Gates to the Mountains. This is definitely worth the trip!!!
Fantastic experience: We had an AMAZING time! Saw some AMAZING sites! And got to hear about local Hero's that mean so much.
Fantastic experience: Great tour guide! Lots of interesting information on Lewis and Clark and the devastating fire many years ago.
Fantastic experience: The boat ride at the source of the Missouri River was awesome
Fantastic experience: This is a good little local tour done via a boat that explains a little history of Montana. $20 per person, bring a lite jacket just in case. If you get the chance to do the "BAT" tour do it!!! After stop in to the little gift shop for a drink.
Fantastic experience: Boat tour was great. The guild knew a lot and pointed out historical points. It was hot and there was no shade on the older boat that we were on. Overall a great tour.
Fantastic experience: This was an awesome experience, highly recommend! Beautiful scenery, wildlife, and you can gain a ton of knowledge as our tour guide has been doing tours a long time.
Positive experience: Great boat tour with lots of informative narration. Take the small boat
Fantastic experience: Great trip on the river, lots of great scenery. Tour boat captain new alot about local history
Fantastic experience: This was a great and affordable boat tour. The guide was very experienced, knowledgeable and attentive. There were people of all ages, but we felt right at home with a lot of other senior citizens! Lol
Fantastic experience: Picturesque journey up the Missouri River. Our guide was knowledgeable and provided historic insights into events in the area. It was awesome to imagine Lewis Clark traveling this exact waterway. We saw many natural wonders and a bald eagle and giants nest. Should you go on the tour, which I highly suggest, give young children a break. It is two hours of sitting on a huge boat listening. I enjoyed every minute, but observed children less impressed. Definitely must see!
Fantastic experience: Tourboat Captain Kari was great, history of the canyon was accurate as well as entertaining.
Fantastic experience: Amazing tour
Fantastic experience: We had a fantastic Capt and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous! I highly recommend it as a place to visit. It was well worth the money. We saw eagles, ducklings, other types of birds as well. It was a beautiful day!
Fantastic experience: Last summer, I had made last minute plans on the last day of operation for the season and wanted to experience the beauty of the Missouri River. So off I go from Bozeman on a new adventure and found myself on the last enclosed boat tour and sat up front next to the boat captain. He was so funny and very knowledgeable about the history of the mountains and waterways. I was intrigued by the Native Americans and Lewis and Clark contributions to this massive river and mountain region. It was hot inside and the enclosures dimmed photographic views, but I’m very happy with the results. If it was possible, I would had stayed onboard for another two hour tour. As being on the water was so invigorating. I’ll definitely be back and may just try the open aired boat, because you make a pit stop on the east shore an are able to enjoy a short hike to the restrooms. Where you may have the opportunity to discover even more Native American lithographs. Bon voyage!
Fantastic experience: We went as a family of 6 for a midweek afternoon tour. My advice is: get there early. At least 30 minutes. If you can, take the Sacajawea. The bigger boat is cool and has a toilet but, the smaller one stops at the picnic area which is so cool. Kari, (in her words the oldest lady on the lake, was so awesome. FYI guides work odd tips, if they do a great job let them know with cash.
Fantastic experience: I knew of this, but did not realize Mann Gulch was here. Emotional. Our Capt/Tour Guide was fabulous. She makes boat handling look like child's play, knows the geology, and the history of the area.
Fantastic experience: This tour is amazing! 10 out of 5 stars. We went on the older boat - the Sacagawea - and it had better views plus it stopped half way back for a break at a campground. Our guide (I believe her name was Carri) was so knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the area. Her storytelling kept everyone entertained and engaged including my young daughter. Note that you can BYOB and snacks. Don’t miss this tour!
Fantastic experience: Get a guide, go fishing, come back and have ice cream. Wonderful place. Bathrooms on the ground floor.
Positive experience: The guide was amazing, and the stories were great, but the boat was too hot for sitting inside. If you get there late, you won’t be able to see the views and you won’t get much breeze. Strongly advise getting there early.
Fantastic experience: A must do! We had such a great time on the boat ride. Such great info and stories. Our tour guide was great! Learned about Lewis and Clark, Mann Gulch Fire, John Colter and more. $20 per person, food, drinks and bathrooms there.
Fantastic experience: Awesome tour on the water of the Missouri River through the mountains. Tim gave an interesting and thorough narrative.
Positive experience: The viewe are awesome and the boat is comfortable. The boat captain tells u some history and other stuff as u go down the river. If u want the best views u sit in the back of the boat but then u can't hear the guy because the engine is so loud. U kind of have to choose between hearing the history or getting nice views, I chose the views and don't regret it
Fantastic experience: The boat tour was amazing. So beautiful! 20.00 adault 10.00 children. 2 hour tour!
Fantastic experience: Great tour wonderful boat captain/tour guide. Awesome experience.
Fantastic experience: Fishing and just enjoying the view. BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Fantastic experience: This place is amazing, pictures do not do it justice.
Fantastic experience: The weather was perfect for our Gates of the Mountains 2-hour boat ride. Our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. He also kept turning the boat this way and they do everyone had a good view of whatever he was pointing out. And if someone wanted to see something again, he obliged. The scenery was beautiful. Because there were a lot of reservations for this particular Saturday, there were two boats going out on the 2pm tour. We were on the larger boat which had a toilet. The smaller boat, we were told, stops about halfway for a potty break at the picnic site. I’ve included photos of dome of the beautiful scenery.
Fantastic experience: A great afternoon tour, and lunch spot.
Fantastic experience: Awesome boat tour. The tour guide seemed like she had been there forever with the amount of information she shared. Don't even ask how she handled the boat. Amazing. Can't wait to go back to do it again.
Positive experience: What a beautiful place! Great history and pictures galore.
Fantastic experience: Outstanding experience. Great tour and interesting spectacular views
Fantastic experience: What a cool place! Definitely worth the drive, worth the time. The gate tours are historical, beautiful, and entertaining. Bring water on your tour and have fun with your guide. Ask questions about the rock formations and history of the area.
Fantastic experience: Loved the tour. A real must-see when in Helena, MT. Choose the more open "Sacajawea II" boat if you get the chance (every seat has great views as opposed to the enclosed sections of the bigger boat). The store has great selection of stickers, clothing, and other cool souvenirs (like pottery from downtown Helena's JMacs). Plus they also serve food and drinks. The ticket booth is inside the main building with the store, if you've gotten tickets online you will still need to go in to check in and get a laminated ticket to hand in as you board the boat.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely beautiful beautiful place and the two hour tour is breathtaking seeing back wilderness that the only way you can see is by boat
Fantastic experience: Well worth the trip down the Missouri for these views. And very reasonably priced.
Fantastic experience: Our tour guide was very informative and fun. He took the time to stop and give everyone chances to see the things that he was talking about. A beautiful place.
Fantastic experience: Great boat tour down through the canyon. Our guide was outstanding.
Positive experience: Beautiful scenery, good tour guide. The larger boat needs the "see through" roof replaced. Can't see through it at all. Best seats are outside.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful tour! Scenery is spectacular and our tour guide very informative. Appreciated the fact that he swung the boat around several times so everyone could get good views/photos. Saw a ram resting on the side of a mountain.
Negative experience: Its a great trip only if you get a good seat. Either on the back open deck or a window seat. If you're stuck inside the cabin, you won't see much due to the poor condition of the roof windows.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful boat ride. I recommend sitting in the back uncovered part of the boat. The captain/guide was very knowledgeable and made the trip entertaining.
Fantastic experience: I saw 4 Mountain Sheep with big curly horns, 2 bald eagles, a mother duck with 5 ducklings, Indigenous pictographs and rock formations among the limestone cliffs. Our boat captain Carry was a so knowledgeable and fun to listen to. She had intriguing stories about the canyon and geology of the Missouri River. It was a great way to spend my 64th birthday!
Fantastic experience: Ok it’s touristy but the views are gorgeous. Tour guide was very personable and had lots of personal stories to share. Best to be outside rather than inside the cabin - better views. Pick a less crowded time if possible
Fantastic experience: One of the most beautiful Scinery in United States
Fantastic experience: I've taken this tour 3 times in 2 years with different visiting friends & family & it's always great. Each guide puts their own spin on the info, so I've learned something each time. It's beautiful & you never know what wildlife you'll see. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: Tour was wonderful and if you have a eye for it there is 6 giants on the mountain faces and some u can see the outline of a body. Just a little side note it maybe nice to say a little prayer for those fire jumpers and there brave work they do for all of us.
Negative experience: Terrible tour boat. There are 2 tour boats. The small boat is open. The large boat is enclosed with the back section open. The seating is first come, first served, so we were forced inside the enclosed section of the big boat. If you have to sit in the enclosed section, you can barely see and can't take good pictures. Ruined my experience. I had to move to the back and sit on the life jacket box to see anything.
Fantastic experience: Great tour and tour guide and good ice cream in the gift shop !
Fantastic experience: The boat tour was very pleasant. They have two boats, the largest is mostly covered which restricts the views but just a little while shading you from the summer heat, we were glad we chose to sit right up front. The tour guide was knowledgeable of the varied history and geography of the area and mixed in a few attempts at humor but don't expect standup quality humor. We saw multiple bald eagles, a group of turkey vultures, a mother and kid mountain sheep, deer, and more. Bring zoom lenses if you want good pictures of the animals and details like 10,000 + year old cliff paintings. But don't have your heart set on seeing a lot of wildlife as the guide told us this was the most he'd seen on one tour all year. Easily worth the price of admission and only a couple of miles from Interstate 15, just a short drive north of Helena. PS - Pictures don't come close to conveying the experience.
Fantastic experience: Love this tour! I recommend the dinner cruise, too. It's beautiful at that time of day.
Fantastic experience: This tour was absolutely fantastic. Three of us went and enjoyed ourselves immensely
Positive experience: The captain / tour guide is fantastic, the boat really sucks. If you’re sitting in the middle, you can’t see much at all. Make sure you get a window seat or sit outside so you actually get to see the beauty out there.
Fantastic experience: Amazing tour!!! The sacajawea boat provides ample pic opportunities with no obstructions. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the ride very entertaining.
Fantastic experience: Great tour. Captain was knowledgeable and personable. It was a great ride on a beautiful day. Well worth the low, low price of admission.
Fantastic experience: Great family experience! The Captain was informative and fun. I'd definitely go again.
Fantastic experience: I try to take this tour at least once a year. The scenery is awe inspiring and the information the captain of the boat gives you is fun and educational. Any time we have visitors from out of town we take them
Fantastic experience: We were told by TB Diner this was a good place to see, we took their advice. We enjoyed our 2 hour tour, relaxed while Dan shared fun facts and fiction with us. Would recommend this tour, just get away from it all and relax in the outdoors!!
Fantastic experience: Hi guys kayden GOSCH here this is one of my favorite experiences in Montana the boat driver was so funny I would tell you his name if I remembered sorry oh and Google maps stop sending me all this notification nonsense Peace! ✌️
Fantastic experience: I used to do this with my family in the 80s and 90s...loved it then and they have exceeded my Now expectations! Great time !! Great history great place! And our guide was the best!!
Fantastic experience: Awesome tour! So beautiful with so much history. Worth it everything I go.
Fantastic experience: Inspiring and thrilling to be walking (well, actually boating) down the stretch of the Missouri River that so intrigued Lewis & Clark. The boat captain/guide was very knowledgable and had a good sense of humor. I would love to someday take one of their "bat cruises", but there are only a handful of tours offered each year and the tours fill up quickly.
Positive experience: Our guide was tremendous! I grew up in Montana and learned interesting facts that I didn't know. The view was tremendous. I thoroughly enjoyed my time.
Fantastic experience: So much fun the tour guide was great we had so much fun he is very Knowledgeable About the Lewis and Clark Hill and smoke jumpers history in that area and the Animals
Fantastic experience: Gates of the Mountain boat tour was amazing and worth the $20 dollars per person. I'm so glad my husband and I signed up to go for the 2 hour boat tour to learn so much more about the Missouri river and the mountains. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Awesome place to visit. The guide we had was extremely knowledgeable. It was definitely worth going. The mountains were on both sides of the river. If you go get the wooden boat. I think the guides name was Scott.
Fantastic experience: Came to town to see my daughter and she recommended this tour. Great idea. Very cool. Amazing scenes. Awesome experience
Fantastic experience: This is a very beautiful place to visit. The boat tour is very reasonably priced and our boat captain, Brian, is very knowledgeable and funny. I highly recommend a visit if you re in the area!
Fantastic experience: Beautiful drive to get there and we plan on taking the boat tour next time we go. It is quite reasonably priced and the boats look well maintained and comfortable. There is a nice exhibit about the local history and more.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful place! A must see in Montana. Take a tour boat and check it out! You won't be disappointed. The boat tickets are only $20 for a two hour or so trip.
Fantastic experience: What a great tour and so affordable!! The guide talked the whole 6 mile route down river and shared stories and answered questions on the return. We saw several bald eagles on the way and the guide would spin the boat for all to see. The river valley is gorgeous with beautiful and humbling views all around. At base, the bathrooms are clean and it's a larger operation with more robust food options than anticipated and a souvenir shop. We would go on this tour again!
Fantastic experience: Thoroughly enjoyed the boat tour through the Gates of the Mountains. It was easy to book our tickets. Captain Kari was wonderful! She pointed out all the formations of the canyons and river, spotted wildlife, and poignantly shared the history of the area. This is the most memorable thing we did on our trip.
Fantastic experience: I loved visiting this place over the weekend and given the opportunity to capture these arial photos. Very awesome place to visit.
Fantastic experience: Gorgeous scenery from start to finish! We went on the little boat, and had a great view of everything. The captain was a great storyteller, really bringing tour to life for us. When we went, it was sunny and warm...bring a hat, and water with you.
Fantastic experience: Amazing beauty. Boat tours. History of Lewis and Clark. Staff was engaging and helpful.
Fantastic experience: I love learning about local history when I am in vacation and this did not disappoint. Our guide had a lot of great story's of Lewis and Clark expedition and the story of how this tour has been in operation for over 150 yrs. We loved our time on the Missouri.
Fantastic experience: Amazing!!!!! This is another worldly place. A must see if you are in the area. Our guide was great. We saw a few Eagles.
Positive experience: This is a great way to see parts of the river that most can't unless you have a boat, the narrated tour makes it worth every penny.
Fantastic experience: What a great way to spend an afternoon! The views are amazing, the tour guides add to the experience, and it's perfect for the whole family. If you want the best views try to get on the "Country boat" and snag the very back bench seats.
Fantastic experience: The scenery was incredible. The guide was very knowledgeable. Take the smaller open boat if possible. Would be nice to have a deck above the captain.
Fantastic experience: The tour boat takes about an hour and a half trip down river. Its beautiful!
Fantastic experience: You start at the lake and travel down the Missouri R., getting bits of historical information about Lewis and Clark, the Natives, wildlife, and past fires. You can choose to be on an open boat, which makes one bathroom stop along the way. Or, you can be on the larger boat with access to a bathroom and shade. The captains are knowlegeable and entertaining. The views are spectacular and the history is also great. The trip goes by fast. I would do this again in a heartbeat!
Negative experience: Tour guide was amazing. Very knowledgeable, had a good schtick that didn’t sound too rehearsed. Really saved the overall trip. Issues are boat size (if you are on of the last 1/3 to board you will be sitting in middle row with no good access to look up except opaque dirty plexiglass ceilings. Really too overcrowded to enjoy fully. And kids free means you will have at least one child crying because 2 hours in the heat in the middle row is too much for a 3 year old. Beautiful scenery and great guide almost make it worth it though. Almost.
