AAA State College Office

Negative experience: I’ve had a few dead battery over the years and someone comes fairly quickly and jumps my car. Good service. But I rarely receive good service at the State College office. I went in for travel agent service and was told they were too busy and to make an appointment. So I made an appointment, arrived on time, waited 20 minutes and then was told they were too busy to help although there were very few people at the office. I gave it one more chance and the person that helped was friendly but told me to use Google to get information because it was easy. There doesn’t seem to be any value in using this office as a travel agent. Some of the staff act like they’re doing me a big favor and would rather that customers don’t come in. Others are friendly but the negative experiences are remembered. I’ve been a member for decades but I’m questioning if I should continue.

Positive experience: They were very helpful with our title transfer. I needed a paper insurance card which I don't get any more and they went above and beyond to help me get a copy from my insurance company. The items they sell there are pretty pricey, but good.

Fantastic experience: Empathetic customer service on the phone. Or perhaps, just friendly and helpful.

Negative experience: Their service is the worst. Especially, there is an elderly male person who is very rude and unprofessional. First day I went there for my vehicle registration. He told me that as I leased it from a different state, they cannot do it. Then I informed it to my dealer from where I leased the vehicle. They called AAA and someone told the dealer that they can do it and it should not be a problem. So, I went there again on a different day. This time the same person told me that they can do it but he won't do it then as it was raining and he had to go out to verify my car's VIN number. It was very weak rain. Like even if you stand in the rain for 5 mins, your shirt wont get wet. He told me to come back when the rain stops or do it from sonewhere else. I politely requested him that I don't know other place and requested him to tell me the name of a few other places nearby. He told me that he cannot tell me any and I have to find it by myself. I then went to tri-county office and finally registered my vehicle without any isse. He should be fired of his job immediately.

Positive experience: If I gotta wait a whole hour for road service ,I don't think I'm gonna renew my membership next year 2026. You need to fix your app better and having people on my account that are no longer on. Your app can degenius other things they recognize but can't recognize a password.

Fantastic experience: Super Friendly, super nice. It’s good to have a membership here if you are registering your cars, but also because you do get discounts at certain hotels.

It was a quick and easy process. I've also gone in and called in to renew my AAA membership, which was also a quick and easy process.

Negative experience: 4 years ago ---> AS Time goes, I'm not pleased with this office, Back in the day, Notarizing a paper with not a big deal, but now it's a big problem. It has to be notarized form from their standards. No more tour books, so what about the older generation that does not use cell phones?

Negative experience: Horrible service, horrible staff, and a waste of time. Went in on Wednesday 01/03/24 for a title transfer since they were the only ones open in town on that day. After 20 minutes into the process, the older gentleman with the glasses and short hair stated in a rude manner that PennDot system is down. Ruined my sale on that day and left unsatisfied. If you know your system is down, then why not inform the customer ahead of time? Save yourself a headache and go to tri county, where they’ll treat you better.

Negative experience: My boyfriend broke down on the side of the highway near Port Matilda around 8 pm. He called AAA and was on hold for nearly an hour. He then put in a request around 9 and was told someone would be there by 10:56. Keep in mind, this is a very dangerous highway with only a small shoulder. He waits until 10:56 and keeps calling for updates. At 10:56 he’s told no one is coming for him and he has to call in the morning. He has to be with his car so he was waiting outside on a dangerous highway for 3 hours for no one to come.

Fantastic experience: Nice place, made the process of a title transfer real easy. There was a discrepancy with my address (I recently moved) and Jerry walked me through the whole process of changing my license on the dmv website, saving me a trip to that wasteland.

Negative experience: Called three times over three days to set up a trip and never got a call back. Booked it myself in 25 minutes. I really don't see any reason for this membership.

Fantastic experience: Stephen Mariner was so patient and helpful during the insurance process. It was the first time I was purchasing insurance on my own and he patiently answered all my questions and made sure I really understood my policy throughout the whole process. The titling and registration process for my car was also smooth and easy. The atmosphere of the offices is a little depressing but the employees are helpful and kind.

Negative experience: Not a friendly or helpful AAA. Go to some other AAA.

Negative experience: Literally won’t help move my car, after I told them the problem, bad service, takes long time to get to your car.

Negative experience: HORRIBLE SERVICE. My daughter who is a college student in Lock Haven and has an associate AAA membership hit a deer and needed her car towed. Because the Lock Haven AAA HAS NO CONTRACT with a tow company, my daughter was directed to the closest AAA - State College. After waiting over an hour, she was told they had NO TOW Trucks to send. Is there a crisis in State College that is not being reported? Extremely rude people who just exasperated an already upsetting situation. It is No wonder the State Police Officer told her not to bother calling AAA. They obviously have had past experiences with NO SERVICE. Why are they taking our membership fee for 3 family members when they can't provide roadside assistance as advertised?

Fantastic experience: Booked an Alaska tour and cruise, best vacation we have ever had. Sue did a wonderful job, all the details were covered.

Negative experience: Certain services only available for arbitrary and unlisted hours. Even even no customers are there, they turn you away if they don't feel like working.

Negative experience: Unprofessional, rude, and unacceptable service. We arrived at AAA on 8-27-2022 (Saturday) at around 12:15 pm for a title transfer. Prior to arriving, we had googled their hours and found out that they are open till 1. We were first greeted by an older gentleman wearing glasses in a very rude and hostile manner. “We don’t usually do title transfers after 12” is what he directly said and in a very harsh way. He then accepted to take us to start the process and we handed him our paperwork. The first thing he stated was that he will not accept nor complete this title transfer because he believed there was an error on the title. After mentioning to him that I had gotten this title directly from Harrisburg Penndot, he still continued to make it harder and his goal was to try to find a way to turn you down and be very harsh towards you. His manner was very rude and very unprofessional. We ended up going to Tri-County Tag Service down the block and they transferred the title with no problem (this shows you that he has no knowledge with dealing with customers or with title transfers). I’ll sure say that AAA has lost me as a customer and will not be coming back again. This employee definitely needs better training.

Negative experience: This office never seems to pick up their phone and when they do, you will wish you have never called. Tri County Tag Service is a much better place to transfer registration and title work. Additional customer service training is needed for AAA employees because they lack it.

Fantastic experience: They helped me with what they could and I appreciated it so much penn dot screwed up bad AAA printed me the paper showing the screw up I took penn dot to court over registration suspension which I sent in all my documents needed they still sent me paper work saying I’m suspended I had pay $188 to appeal the suspension then wait 3 months for my court date which I won! Feb 10th restored my registration then Feb 18th penn dot suspended my registration for no reason! After I WON my court case! So AAA helped me find the right paper work which I took to my state rep and all matters were resolved after 1 week! Thank you AAA

Negative experience: We called the day before to make sure they could do a Title transfer at 5:00 they told us they could. We showed up the next day at 4:45 and they told us they don’t do them after 4:30. Incompetence. Won’t go back for anything!!!

Negative experience: Came here yesterday because they offered notary services. Instead left feeling like I did something incredibly wrong. I needed someone to verify that I was the one signing a letter to the Harrisburg motor vehicle services, they were even the ones to recommend AAA for it. Instead it was “we can’t do that, we can just do forms for Penndot. I don’t think your letter even has legal lingo”. Last time I checked it was just asking for my PA tag to be a dead tag in the system and just needed someone to verify it really was me sending the letter. Fine, you can’t do it. No need to act extremely rude and act like I asked you to do something completely out of left field. Completely unprofessional. I even called Harrisburg again to make sure I was handling it correctly. They repeated to get a notary to say it’s me and that no, it didn’t need to be written by an attorney; also said they weren’t sure why they couldn’t do it. Never saw people act so dramatic. “Is the tag even from PA” - well, I seem to recall saying that in my opening sentence. I’ll go elsewhere from now on, so incredibly rude. I wasn’t asking for someone to sign a letter that could take them to court. There are better ways to handle things instead of acting like I stuck a match in front of your eyes and being loud enough for everyone to hear my business. I was very polite, I have better customer service skills.

Great service - (1) pay attention to details - they provided very detailed instructions on what documents needed and what to expect after processing (2) guided us through different price options with or without AAA membership and 1 or 2 year registration and (3) provided further instructions on the next steps - auto check and PA title, etc. Highly recommend!

Negative experience: Go to Tri-County Tag service instead!!! As always, in my experience, AAA terribly dissapoints. Not a surprise. I was there first thing this morning, and man oh man.. What a horrible experience. First, the guy who does the check-in was so rude to the person ahead of me. He was an international student asking to register his vehicle, and he went off on the student about not having a driving license, instead of offering to help him. “How could I even have an idea of where you are in the process? I have no idea, I can’t help you, you’ll have to. figure out your process.” So discriminatory! WOW! I felt so bad for the kid. Since I went through the process myself, I told the person I will help him if he brings me something to write down what he needs to get his driving license. I guess the rep did not like that. I proceeded on presenting my documents, showing a proof I paid sales tax in CO prior to moving, and he freaked out on me AS WELL, telling me he doesn’t care what they do in CO, this is a different state so I have to pay again!? I have never heard anything more absurd. I called CO DMV and they confirmed that I have already paid sales tax, so I should not be paying it again. They proceeded on murmuring and laughing that they have already explained to me from distance (Ya, I was kept at the door, so I had to yell across the lobby so they hear me - ridiculous!). Then the guy, no idea what his name, but he is the older guy who greats and navigates people, told me, “We are done here, you can leave.” This was the most ridicilous, unsensitive bunch of people I have ever seen. I already expected this as I have had issues with AAA in the past, but this greatly exceeded my expectations on poor cusomter service. (UPDATE: I just got off the phone with the DMV and they confirmed I DO NOT NEED TO PAY SALES TAX AGAIN and that apparently the people there don't know what they are doing). I should have believed the Yelp reviews and went to Tri-County Tag service instead. Please do yourself a favor, and go there. PS: Your employees need some training on how to talk to people and how to address international students.

Positive experience: No AAA discount on air line tickets, in fact they charge a $25 fee if you book your tickets through them. Question, what good is their service for what you pay for your annual fee??

Negative experience: The staff was not very helpful and had a very "I don't care about you at all" kind of tone. No one would explain why or how things were the way they were, but instead just let repeating the same useless information every time you asked for clarification.

Negative experience: Why isn't ZERO stars an option? Do not use this branch of AAA for tag and title work. Their automated system was down so they had to do it all by hand. The girl who did the actual work had never done it before so a 3-person training session ensued. About 40 minutes into her training it was determined the girls helping her had made a mistake by forgetting a $25 fee and the trainee had to start all over again. An hour and 10 minutes later we were finally headed out the door but had paid $105 for what was billed as expedited, on-line service that reportedly should only take 20 minutes. The auto dealer involved in the sale was livid but not that it had taken so long. He couldn't believe they charged us anything let alone $105. A few days later I called AAA corporate to tell them our story. After getting kicked around like a pumpkin in a stockyard we were told that no one except the particular office manager could do anything for us so I was transferred to him. After a brief and somewhat surly conversation with him he said, "No." to our request to at least be refunded the difference between what we in PA pay a regular notary to fill out an MV-40 by hand and what some computerized offices charge for the on-line version. As I was hanging up he made some kind of smart aleck remark that I did not catch. Very professional of you Sir. I for one will never be back and I doubt the auto dealer we were buying from will use them again either. If you do, be ready. Take a drink and a lawn chair because you might be there a while. No slam against the young lady who did the actual work. She did well. If only we had stepped up to a different window that day.

Fantastic experience: I just don't "get" the t majority of negative reviews - not that I doubt the reviewers, but my experience has been so different, in the opposite direction. I feel compelled to write in on their behalf even though I'm rushing to prepare for a trip. Perhaps it IS true that mostly unhappy consumers bother to write in, so I'll balance the reviews a bit. In the 30 years I've lived in this area, I've had nothing but positive experiences with this AAA office even though for over half that time, I haven't even been a member. That applies to phone calls (never had trouble getting through) and in person contact, from trip maps, car issues, notarization and most lately, the purchase of luggage from their amazing selection. (Let me digress and add I'm astonished at the remodeling of their office including this sales option). Everyone has been kind, polite and helpful on every occasion and I hope prospective consumers will consider my positive experiences before writing them off. A beautiful showroom and professional, efficient staff.

Negative experience: I wish I had read these reviews prior to coming in to do my registration here. The other poor reviews are not wrong. I have been in 3 times now and just received a call today to tell me that they did the registration incorrectly. Basically, agent who processed it did not understand PennDot rules. Unfortunately, the consequences fall on me- both effort, time and financially. It took forever for the agent to admit she messed up. I will have to finish the process out here, but as soon as I can take my business elsewhere I will. Make the smart decision and just go elsewhere.

Negative experience: Terrible service. Ridiculous price. Don’t recommend them ever. First thing -that new guy don’t know any rules . Maximum he can selling hot dogs at the Sheetz. He want 60$ for Power Attorney. 60$, are you kidding me People, that cost 5$ for stamp and 10$ fee maximum. 1200% agent fee!!! Second thing- when I came with buyers, he sad me - I can’t do the title transfer, because- YOU GOT POWER ATTORNEY NOT FROM US!!!! How that possible It is notarized Power Attorney. I lost time, I lost my buyers. All thanks to AAA guys. Guys, if you wanna get adequate service and price go to Tri County Service. ( I don’t know if we have another place to do that) If things happens, and owner will read this review- Boss, you should lay off at least half of that Lazy flies and then you can have competitive prices.

I've had worse experiences with AAA over the phone, but the State College office is always superior in terms of customer service. The passport photos were free with membership, and although they were probably as good as the smile-less required passport photos can be, the service was quick and efficient despite not retaining any extra $$ for the service!
