Negative experience: Avoid this place. I ordered fly tying materials. Three months later only part of the order had arrived. I had to phone them to find out that they don't have a means of knowing what's in stock or when things will arrive. Every other place I've ordered from tells me if things aren't in stock so I can decide if I want to back order. Not Marriotts. They take your order and hope you'll simply wait, and wait, and wait until their supplier gets it to them. A very skeezy way to do business. After sitting for months, I asked what they would do to make it right. Answer? Nothing. There are reputable places to buy fly tying materials. This just isn't one of them.
Fantastic experience: I spoke with Kevin on the phone about some old fly rods I inherited. He was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I'll be visiting them soon.

Fantastic experience: Was here back in may trying to get things for my 1st fly trip to mammoth. Everyone in the store was helpful and knowledgeable. They guided me on what flies I needed to what areas to go to during the time frame I would be in mammoth. Even caught my 1st cutthroat. I will be back here again
Negative experience: If I could give this place a negative star review I would. When you select items for shipping you only find out after the order is received ... they are out of stock. Months later you finally receive the merchandise. If I'm ordering something it's for that season... I don't need it latter... I need it in short order, a week maybe. Most websites let you know if what you are selecting is in/out of stock as you are placing your order... not this place. You would think after that experience I wouldn’t go back. But, thought I’d give them another chance. The website is extremely slow… to the point you are tempted to just give up. The search engine is the worst I've ever experienced it is awful, and slow. I'm a front and back-end web developer... so have a lot of experience developing websites. Go to the website and type in what you’re searching for… you will get back 100 items or more that have nothing to do with what your searching for. I called to get help finding a wool fly patch. When I first explained the online ordering process to the guy at the shop He would have none of it. He doesn't listen, could care less, and hung up on me as I explained to him, he is not a good listener. Bob Marriot should fire this guy. I emptied my cart and logged off. If I could have deleted account info too I would have… good bye Bob. Notice how Kevin responded. This review stands as is. It's not something you can erase when it's the truth.

I was in earshot of your conversation with my employee, and most of what you expressed in this review is a blatant lie. Navigating around your yelling, he did everything he could to assist you numerous times; he didn't hang up on you, but instead, you hung up on him. All you wanted to do was yell at him about our search engine while refusing his offer of assistance. As clearly as we can with our current website, we state in our store policy and on our banner page that we do not and cannot stock the nearly 70,000 items on our website. I'm sorry if you missed this. Frankly, I am increasingly intolerant of individuals like you who feel entitled to vent anger and berate people at will. In this case, it was for us not stocking one item you wanted, and then you lie about your experience in a review. Really? Reviewing the notes on your prior orders, the last one being nearly two years ago, 12/7/2022, I read that you have angrily called us more than once before today. We are in mutual agreement to no longer do business. I have gladly deleted your account. Take your aggressive, angry attitude elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: I have visited this store several times and each time it’s been a very positive and helpful experience. Great selection of rods and reels, decent selection of waders and other gear. Hard to believe it’s located in So Cal, I have been spending the year here for work, came from NC and this place has been a breath of fresh air.

The store was arranged, premade flies, fly tying supplies, flyfishing gear, and guide information about different locations. They offer classes in fly tying. The store is easy to locate and close to the freeway.

Negative experience: Pretty much the same story as others have posted about purchasing fly tying materials online from this fly shop. Placed my order, paid, and some items were out of stock. Asked them to ship those items out when they got in stock. A year+ later no backorder items shipped. I had reached out multiple times over that year and got the same story that they were still backordered. Most recent check-in on the backordered items lead to them claiming they shipped out the items with the original order..What? When I told them that, that was incorrect, they never replied back. Wow, I guess BM’s not above weaseling out of a couple of owed spools of ultra wire.

Positive experience: Really nice place has everything you need to go flyfishing just very expensive which it is a very expensive sport but a lot of the rods, combos/outfits can be purchased for a lot cheaper online and I mean a lot three outfits/ combos they offered me was $100 cheaper on Amazon.
Hi Daniel, thanks for your review. Our pricing is in line with all fly shops in the country. Discontinued product is of course marked down which is maybe what you saw on Amazon. We also pay the sales tax on rods, reels, waders and boots over $100 which Amazon doesn't. As a local guide, and assuming, a fly fishing guide, the fly fishing specialty shops are important to your business (Amazon isn't) and you should give them as much support as you can, be it us, or your local shop. Consider establishing a working relationship with your local shop where all parties will gain knowledge, offer expert advise and sell the customer the very best gear for their fishing adventure. Your specialized fly shops will only sell the best, and most reputable gear in the industry. They need your support, and you need theirs if you strive to have a reputable guiding service. Fantastic experience: I came in here with my switch rod on very little knowledge of which lines to use for my rod. Craig helped me out and helped inform me on what lines are best for my uses, He helped spool backing and line on my reel and got me setup and on my way in a quick manner. Fantastic experience: love this store, its a dream fly fishing store. Haven't had a bad experience yet. All the employees I have talked with were happy and eager to help me out and explain whatever I needed since I am new to fly fishing world. Haven't been in there yet without hearing "is there something I can help you with? " Even the customers in there are in another zone of friendliness. My only complaint is they need more stores :D
Negative experience: I came in just to swing by since I was on that side of town - which doesn’t happen very often since I live in San Diego. I come in and was stared down by one of the employees, it wasn’t until I said greeted him that he said hello. I didn’t think much of it, I went about my business and checked out the shop. They have everything you need and more, solid selection for sure. From rods, reels, tying materials galore and more. I got approached by another employee and he asked if I needed anything and I asked where the indicators were, he directed me there and I thanked him and he went along his way. I was looking for a particular product in a certain size, asked someone from behind the counter, lo and behold, the person that stared me down and gave me a smug response like I was supposed to know where everything is. Again, didn’t think much about it got what I needed and checked out some more stuff. I went to check out and the same guy checked me out, asked me if I wanted to start an account, I declined. As my payment was processing, he was holding a conversation with another employee and he seemed to be more concerned with that than the customer. Basically my transaction ended with him asking the other employee, is there anyone else coming in? Multiple times. Just handed me my receipt. Didn’t ask if I needed a container for my indicators that I bought in singles so I had a pocket of indicators. Cool. I hope his day got better, here’s to you Leon. Overall, incredible store and immense selection. I don’t know if that was a one time deal but none the less, extremely rude from initial impression to the transaction. Customer service is imperative and I felt like this is where it faltered a bit. I’ll come back, I just would not want to deal with that particular person again.

Negative experience: First of all, the 1 star rating does not apply to the front line people in the company. Matt, Nick and the other guys I spoke with on the phone all did their best to fix the numerous issues I had with my first (and only) 3 fly tying materials orders with Bob Marriott's. (2 web placed orders, one phone placed order). The difficulties trying to buy materials from this company stem from systemic issues which are the responsibility of the owners and managers, and those issues are many. I buy materials online from at least 6 other vendors throughout the US and Canada, from coast to coast, and I've never seen such disorganization as with BM's. 1) most significantly, when selecting items, their system does not indicate 'out of stock'. No 'email me when available', no 'not currently available', no indication that what you think you are buying is not in stock. 2) they ship what they have, not what you ordered. Of my first 3 orders they had exactly 2 of the 13 items I ordered. 3) The phone order was placed to buy items suggested by the salesman as substitutes for what they didn't have, and then they didn't have THOSE items either! Why suggest products to buy in lieu of out of stock items when the replacement products aren't available either!!! 4) whether in stock or not, the company charges your card immediately IN FULL including shipping for what you've ordered. Pre-authorization of a card I agree with, charging full invoice plus shipping for product that is neither in stock nor has shipped is wrong. Charge the card for what has shipped, not what's on the order, especially when the order cannot be filled. This broken model is not customer friendly and reflects poorly on who ever is running the place, not on the poor lads on the front lines. Never again.

I want to reply to some of the comments in your review...
Of the 50,000 items listed on our website, we don't have nor would it be possible to have all 50,000 in stock. We do note this in our store policy profile. It would appear that you didn't see that. You are correct that we collect money upfront; this is the most expeditious means of getting your order out the door. Your suggestion of a pre-authorization is a good one, however not feasible as there is a limited time limit on pre-authorizations before they expire. As a fly tier, especially at this time, you can understand that getting materials can take days, if not weeks, far exceeding pre-authorization windows. Additionally, chasing down money afterward for the product would slow the process of getting the product out the door to you considerably. Not in your or our best interest.
Mark, maybe you aren't aware of the difficulty fly shops are having getting the product at this time. Unfortunately, we are not exempt from supply change issues, labor shortages, and the general disruptions of 2 years of covid. We receive tying materials from 30+ vendors. We order from the core vendors, Hareline, Wapsi, Natures Spirit, Umpqua, Renzetti Distribution 2 or 3 times per week. None allow backorders, nor can they advise us when the product will be available with any dependable accuracy. We, therefore, hammer them with constant orders in the hopes of securing any product that arrives at their facilities. Our salesman's suggestion to substitute a similar product from vendor X to vendor Y ( which you noted was not in stock either) was only an attempt to get your product. (X didn't have it, so let's try Y) I am sorry our salesman didn't communicate this better to you to help you understand this. We generally reply within 48 hours via email or phone regarding notification of your backorders. Unfortunately, your order was placed on 12/21 amid our 12 days of Christmas sales. We were overwhelmed with hundreds of daily web orders, which put us well behind on all correspondences. We couldn't avoid our delayed responses, but our apologies nonetheless.
To summarize, we don't have all the items listed on our website (not enough room even in our 8000 sq ft store) but will do all we can to get your items as quickly as possible and timely notify you regarding backorders.
I hope this clarifies some things for you and hope to do business again one day.

I checked on their website that stated employees and customers were required to wear a mask. Really disappointed that I made the drive. Will take my business elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: I know absolutely NOTHING about fly fishing when I entered, but left with a better understanding with the help of Marriott’s awesome staff. Fantastic experience: Recently I ordered some fly tying materials online from Australia. Deciding on which full capes to purchase was worryingly hard. They are quite the investment. It is also tough due to the nature of cape availability. The team at Bobb’s demonstrated the patience of saints as I swapped and changed my order at least 5 times due to availability issues. Nothing was too onerous for them. Could not recommend this place enough. In these crazy COVID times it is so pleasant to find people helping people. Thanks guys.

Positive experience: I placed an order i needed asap, and before checking out, i made sure there were no warnings indicating out of stock. Upon receiving the order, I was shipped a wrong item, and they advised it was due to the iteam ordered being back ordered and out of stock, and a system glitch sent me the wrong item (priced more expensively as well, which I had to pay for). They also only sent half of the order and said the other half was back-ordered. However, they made this right, by sending me a replacement item, and did not charge additional fees. They could have easily forgotten about this and moved on, and the fact hat they made it right will make me come back again.
Hey Seth, sorry for your dissatisfaction on your last order. A couple of issues that complicated our communication with you; You didn’t provide us with a good phone number (only had 9 digits) so we could only contact you by email which appears you weren’t getting either. We tried a white pages search for your phone # but couldn’t find you. Additionally we had no sense of your urgency as you didn’t list any information regarding this. There is a comments box on the check out where this can easily be added. We check for notes on all orders but the box was empty on your order.
So here is a rundown on the status of your order from 6/22…
We did have a hiccup on one of the items whereas an old part number wasn’t properly cleared out for the new product. This clearing is an automated function that didn’t do its job. Due to this error we did send you the correct item on 7/3 at no charge to you. At the same time we issued you a refund for the discontinued item which is SOP when we are closing out an order. We sent you an email explaining this. The replacement resin was mailed 7/3 via USPS and should arrive in a few days.
Regarding our inventory, as much as we would like to house all 55k items we list on the website, it simply isn’t feasible. I have copied our Inventory Statement as it is found on the front page of our website under store policy. Additionally, I have listed our back order policy for clarification. Inventory
We have over 50,000 items listed on our website. While it is not feasible for us to inventory all of our listed items, we do try to keep a healthy inventory of the better selling products. We order from most of our vendors twice a week. Fly tying product are often ordered three times a week. Hooks (all brands) are often difficult to keep a consistent inventory on. This is due to gaps in our vendors inventory due to the nature of the hook business. Some of our hook manufacturers are small cottage industries. This is also true of some fly tying materials. Please be assured that we are doing our best to receive these products and will continue to order from vendors until we receive the product. Please be advised that it is often difficult for our fly tying materials vendors to provide us with estimated delivery for a variety of reasons. It is just the nature of this business. Whiting Farms products can often be delayed. Whiting harvests their birds 2 or 3 times per year which can create lengthy gaps in availability. There is also very limited information provided as to what color cape or saddle will be available and at what time. This can be due to the birds growth among other factors. This is of not of any fault of Whiting Farms and is just the nature of the bird business. Please note that we are pleased to accommodate the expediting of products that we don't have in stock and you need quickly.
Back Orders and Out of Stock Items
We try to maintain a robust inventory of most items listed online. If a situation arises where we are unable to fill your entire order, you will be notified to discuss the order status. We can ship in stock items immediately and back ordered items when they all arrive, or hold your order until it is complete and ship at that time. Orders with back ordered items will NOT be charged shipping charges a second time, unless it is an international order.
All back orders are given priority when new merchandise arrives at our shop, so your wait should be a short one, usually 7-14 days. Generally, no back orders will be held longer than 30 days and back orders of less than $10 will be canceled.

Traveling across this country and fishing everywhere I travel, some shops have staff that aren't too friendly... not here!! Bob Marriotts staff is amazing. Nick, TC, and Jason were all great, friendly and welcoming! Lots of information on flys, local knowledge on fish and spots to try. 10/10 will shop here again!!

Fantastic experience: Was looking for a big sun had, they didn't have one my size but the employee told me about some spots to check out in case they might have had it. Shop is very big, from the outside it looks like a small shop but they have a lot of cool stuff.

Negative experience: Inventory of their website is not up to date and then you have to follow up several times with them. Emails get answered within 2-3 days and I am still waiting for my money to get refunded for goods I haven’t received. There are lots of other shops out there to spend my money on.

Negative experience: Deeply lacks a sense of customer service online and their website inventory is way off. I ordered several items from them that showed in-stock online. I just received my order in the mail today and over half the items I ordered were missing. I never received an email or a phone call to let me know they were out of stock. All they did was add a brief note on the receipt that the items that weren't included were backordered. I would have never placed the order with them if I'd known it would only partially be filled. Spend your dollars somewhere else with a company who'll provide customer service and who has the capacity to keep their inventory up to date on their website. There are too many good companies out there. Give your business to anyone but BM.
Fantastic experience: A female rookie fly tyer and noob fly angler who shops at a flyfishing store with her female partner COULD be made to feel rather awkward about all of that. But not here! These guys are always so welcoming and helpful without being pushy, patronizing or condescending. There is a dizzying array of fly tying materials available, and all of the knowledge one needs to sort through it. All the guys are great, but Nick is our favorite (don't tell the others)! :) Great store, great staff -- go there.

Negative experience: I share the frustrations from Chris' review earlier this year. I ordered fly tying material for an upcoming trip. Apparently they only stocked about 40% of my order and it took 3-4 weeks for me to receive the rest. They need to have an out-of-stock option for their website. Negative experience: I have to say.... the customer service was non-existent as I was there for about 45 minutes and not one person greeted me nor asked if I needed help. There were 3 guys and one older who apparently more focused on their tasking than the guest experience. I will take my business elsewhere!!!
Negative experience: Do NOT order Fly Tying Supplies from here if you need them soon! I am getting ready to guide for the rest of Fall and ordered $100 worth of tying supplies I needed to finish my season. I sent the order in at 5pm the night before I got 2 phone calls saying that 2/3 of my order was backordered and that my next day shipping would be $30 bucks. I have ordered with better fly tying sites like Bearsden and JSFlyfishing that give up to date stock and send out their supplies with great efficiency. I will not be ordering with this California based company ever again! Sorry Bro!

Negative experience: Purchased a 10 wt Airflo Tropical flyline on sale via their online site when I received the flyline it was obvious that it had seen use ,it was dirty, had creases where the flyline loop connected with a leader ( telling me that this flyline was probably on a demo rod for customers to try. It also had a lot of twists in its foward section and also seemed a little brittle. Yes I got it on discount but I feel it should have been noted that was the reason for discount.....Needless to say I wont give this half rate shop any more of my business.

Fantastic experience: The staff are the most knowledgeable, friendly and helpful customer service personnel of any store we go into. They are so personable that we always seem to spend more time there just chatting while we get what we went in for.
Negative experience: Ordered 2 in stock items on 9/20/18. Credit card charged same day. No email or phone notification that one item was backordered and will not ship until sometime in October. Called to report problem with poor service, no commitment other than item will be shipped when received.

Negative experience: My husband and I came in to purchase rods and reels, but we were treated so badly by Mark, we left and will find another place to spend our money. Mark should learn not to be so rude and condescending to beginners. He may think he's an expert, and maybe he is, but know one wants to be treated badly. Maybe learn to be helpful, instead of just plane RUDE. Received a call from the manager Kevin, he took the time to follow up and make sure my husband would be treated well in the future. My husband was pleased, and has agreed to return to the store.

Fantastic experience: My wife and I made an appointment for a casting lesson. Ben was our instructor. I had fly fished previously, but my wife had never touched a fly rod before. When we got to the park, Ben took his time with us explaining all of the finer point of rod setup, feeding line, multiple casts and rod breakdown. He was very knowledgeable on the mechanics of each cast and was able to identify the cause of our individual issues. We had a great time.
Negative experience: Went in for a new reel, picked what I wanted, had it up-lined for my fishing style and got mega nasty rudeness from Mark who helped me. He sassed the fact I threw 5WT line on a 3 WT reel. It’s my style and my money. Don’t question me, embrace that I chose to spend money at your shop and that there are fly fishers who want to innovate their style. Unfortunately, that’s the last time I go there, all the sales staff are rude to a degree. To boot, they’re in the shitier section of Fullerton where I question, is the clientele really living there. Move the shop to where the fly fishers live.

I got a call this weekend that one of the items (about $3.00) was back ordered and when it would ship. Great customer service! Positive experience: A love, hate relationship for the last 30 years with this once outstanding saltwater fly shop in Fullerton, CA. What's always bugged(no pun intended) me was at times it's like walking into a Funeral Parlor. Then after spending 1/2 hr looking for something (no salesman to help), why-b/c everyone was berried into their computers, so you'd go to the front desk to ask for assistence, it was sort of like you were trespassing, hey I'm live bait. I've acquired many wonderful items over 3 decades from M's, outfitted 35-40 clients from it. Yet in supporting this uniquely located business, one just can't get over the attitude & inconsistencies. They've had their ups & downs, we all do. In last 12 months, things changed again, a well stocked internet based business, who's not, but there still was that coffin feeling upon entering this unique FF store, a dying business model?. Yet I still love FF and in spite of the noted issue (personal observation), it is one extremely well stocked FF store, rare in today's Inet world, worth the drive from San Diego or Granada Hills. I'm hooked on their great tying inventory, evetything else is online and often at a bargain vs. paying full retail.
