Old Town Trolley Tours is a fantastic way to explore the historic city of Boston, offering visitors an engaging and informative ride through key sights and attractions. While many users have praised the knowledgeable and entertaining drivers, who provide a wealth of city history and personal anecdotes, there are a few points to consider before hopping on board.
Highlights:
- Drivers are often described as friendly, knowledgeable, and entertaining, with many guests mentioning specific guides like Captain Matty and Crafty as exceptional.
- The trolley provides a unique way to see the city, allowing guests to hop on and off at various stops to explore at their own pace.
- Many families appreciated the trolley's accessibility and stroller storage, making it a good option for those traveling with young children.
- Customers enjoyed the engaging narratives and fun stories shared by the drivers, making the experience both educational and entertaining.
- The option to take a break from walking and still see many key Boston landmarks is a significant advantage.
Areas for Improvement:
- Some users experienced long wait times for trolleys, with reports of overcrowded vehicles making it difficult to board.
- The lack of a real-time tracking app for the trolleys was noted, which could enhance the overall experience by allowing guests to know when to expect their ride.
- There were occasional complaints about the quality of sound systems on the trolleys, making it hard to hear narration from the drivers.
- Some guests felt that the pricing could be better justified with improved organization and less crowding.
Overall, Old Town Trolley Tours offers a delightful way for visitors to discover Boston, despite some operational challenges. Many guests recommend the tour for first-time visitors looking to gain a great overview of the city while having fun.
Old Town Trolley Tours: Reviews
Negative experience: Not really a “hop on hop off” if the trolleys are always full. We wanted to use the trolley to actually see the city but the amount of time we waited for rides made it impossible. I’m sure it’s fine if you just want to sit and ride but there are plenty of other tours that do just that.
Positive experience: Overall, a great experience. It would have been a 5/5 if one driver (Twin) had not almost left us despite me and my friend standing directly under the correct sign. Twin pulled further up (due to cars being illegally parked) and open the door for quite literally two seconds. After yelling for his attention, he stopped again and we boarded but instead of apologizing, blamed us as if we should’ve ran to the bus in two seconds. If Twin isn’t your driver, you’re in for a great experience!
Fantastic experience: Fun visit to Boston. Drivers handled difficult traffic well.
Fantastic experience: Murph was the best! He knew his city and is a true blue Bostonian... We could have been on all day w his tour... Lurch was fun too...
Fantastic experience: Our drivers were awesome. Learned a lot and they were friendly and made us laugh a lot. Many hop on and off options made for a great day.
Fantastic experience: Drivers are knowledgeable about the city. They provide all sorts of of useful info from historical facts to where to get the best chowder. Each driver offers their own unique take. A huge bonus is not having to drive yourself through Boston, especially on a day when the trains are down and, therefore, extra busses ale on the road.
Fantastic experience: This tour was fun and very entertaining, Guide was helpful and knowledgeable of Boston Montreal’s will kick your butt in April. Go Habs go.
Fantastic experience: Loved the tour! Raegan was the best tour guide. Funny and entertaining. Knows how to drive through town and highly skilled at it. The trolly had handicap accessibility. Super appreciated. They gave us the direct line to call to let them know we're ready for pickup and they'd have an accessible bus as soon as possible. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: It was a lovely way to go around the city. Our first guide, Lala was absolutely fantastic. Fun and a true storyteller. She brought to life Boston's history.
Fantastic experience: The Boston trolley tour was great because you can get on and off when you want. What made it better was our tour guide Captain Matty he was the best of all our drivers and real asset to the company. He made it more fun for us. Thanks Captain Matty.
Negative experience: Summary: 1. The driver/tour guide makes or breaks your experience 2. Be prepared for long waits at each stop 3. I would only go on this if already included in another tour (seemed like a lot of passengers came from the cruise ships) - not worth paying for standalone tickets in my opinion So, I convinced my husband to take this tour with me as I had a wonderful time on St Augustine's (FL) Trolley Tour. If it wasn't for Captain Matty, our 3rd driver of the day, I would have rated this 1 star. We boarded at Prudential Centre around 12:30pm on a Saturday, and our driver clearly was DYING for her lunch break - kept talking about how hungry and tired she was from the moment we got on the trolley until we finally got to the aquarium. I had also just been to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, so I noticed half of her facts about the place were incorrect, as we drove past. Our entire trolley had to disembark and join a new line at the Aquarium (not just driver switch), for which we waited 20mins in line for 2 more trolleys to go before us. Second driver was not so bad, didn't talk about her stomach the whole time, but was not particularly engaging with her facts either. Got off at USS Constitution, on finishing the site, we waited more than 40 minutes for a trolley with enough seats. The drivers kept radioing the dispatch with the number of passengers, and kept promising an empty trolley for us (about 20-30 passengers waiting at one point), but 3 full trolleys came and went before we could get on. Captain Matty saved the day with enthusiastic and interesting facts, but we were pretty done with the tour at this point.
Negative experience: Thought we would be able to ride all the stops, like the website said. Driver made everyone get off the bus after 3 stops and told us we had to wait 15 mins for the next one. No way everyone was going to fit all on the next one so we opted to just Uber back. Expensive and did not give a ton of history on the places. Would not recommend
Fantastic experience: We had a lot of fun on this bus in Boston with our driver, Cogs. He was a real character. Interesting commentary and good choices for stops. Good way to get an overview of the city.
Fantastic experience: We did both the Summer Nights (with Charles River cruise) and the day-time hop-on, hop-off through Boston and both were great. Crafty was our #1 favourite tour operator/guide/driver by far. :D
Fantastic experience: Great way to check out “Bean Town’ prior to your walk about
Fantastic experience: Great way to see Boston! We had an excellent experience with Miss Jackson and Perez - great commentary from both guides! Also loved that the stop was right outside our hotel! Just one suggestion: maybe have some sort of GPS app so that you can better track when the next trolley is coming :)
Fantastic experience: I didn't expect it, but the hop on hop off trolley yours ended up being the highlight of the trip. What I thought was gonna be basically a bus service between spots ended up being informative and fun. All your tour guides/drivers were great, with 2 of them really standing out (one was a younger African American who was just so fun - wish I took note of his name). Next time I'm in Boston, I will definitely use your company again.
Positive experience: If Neil hadn't been such a great driver / tour guide it would have been 2 or 1 star. The wait was absolutely awful and unacceptable. Literally only was able to "Hop Off" twice because we couldn't get back on. By the Tea Party Boat stop we waited 45 minutes for a shuttle. (3 full shuttles went by). They sold WAY to many tickets for how few shuttles they were running. Many people were waiting at each stop. Spent as much time waiting as we did exploring Boston. Very glad I only got 1 day instead of 2 day. It's a shame, because once we actually got on a trolley the driver did a good job. They KNOW how many tickets they sold, they HAVE TO KNOW they aren't running enough trollies. That's bad customer service.
Fantastic experience: We really enjoyed being able to get a taste of Boston without having to navigate the city on our own. The driver was entertaining, knowledgeable, kind and helpful! The hop on hop off feature was great for being able to more deeply explore areas of interest. This was more than worth the money. I’ve used this trolley company before in Savannah GA and I’ll use them again if the opportunity presents itself.
Fantastic experience: I recommend this tour on day one of your first trip to the city. The driver's are entertaining. You'll discover so much about the city, including personal recommendations, and you can ask questions. Get off and on all day. Buses are clean. I've done it in San Diego, too. I recommend these tours for any city they're in. Shout out to the very sweet and thoughtful Marilyn, and the magnetic, truth-telling King.
Fantastic experience: I only had a day and wanted to see a ton, I was traveling alone and the trolley allowed me to feel independent but also not alone. The drivers and passengers will all so friendly and full of suggestions. My favorite driver by far was Crafty, I even jumped off specifically to see if I lucked back onto his trolley. If you get a chance I recommend a full round with Crafty but overall the whole experience is lovely. Would have only been inenhanced with an app that helped me find stops the paper map is great but I still struggled to find them at times
Fantastic experience: As a first time visitor with limited time this is the best way to see Boston! 14 stops with the driver giving you history of Boston. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: If you're a first time visitor to Boston, as we were, it's the best way to see Boston! Pickup was easy(yes, you may wait a bit, but well worth the wait), the tour guides are informative, funny, and expert drivers , too, considering the narrow streets and impatient Boston drivers. The tour basically covered just about everything you need to see in Boston, knowing then where you may want to spend some extra time at a particular stop, We highly recommend the tour!
Fantastic experience: I can't get over the non stop knowledge that Bailey shared! Great guy!
Fantastic experience: With a little planning you can select which stops to "hop-off" and get back on when you are finished in that area. Be sure to plan for some walking (and the weather) because some stops have several 'must-see' locations close by.
Negative experience: We've ridden Od Town Trolley in many other cities and have loved it but not in Boston. The guides were easily sidetracked especially New York and the buses were not coming every 15 minutes. It was more like every 20-30 then it was likely to be full and you were told there was a rescue trolley coming right behind (10-15 minutes behind) that ended up having only a few seats open. We didn't dare get off at some of the stops we wanted to because of the bus delays so we had to truly prioritize which stops we really wanted to visit.
Fantastic experience: Very informative. Wonderful experience taking the tour on a trolley. So glad we took the kids. It was a fun experience and educational.
Fantastic experience: I was questioning my decision at first on purchasing this trolley tour based on the first two tour guides but boy, the third and fourth tour guides sure did make up for the cheesiness of the first two guides. My favorite guides were true Boston born and raised guys that had the Boston accent and all. They were absolutely hilarious and I loved every minute of my time with them. My only suggestion for the company is to build shelters for ALL stops for your guests for when it’s raining. I got absolutely soaked the day of my tour.
Fantastic experience: My husband recently visited Boston and we decided the best way to get an overview of the city and its sites was take a city tour. Old Town Trolley Tours offered affordable and comfortable transportation. The drivers were quite knowledgeable about the sites. The one down side was the lack of signage as to where the trolley stops, however, this due to city ordinances and not the trolley service. As we didn’t board at the first stop, we had to enlist the help of a local hotel as to where the trolley stop was. Once we found it, we were off. Just remember where the trolley drops you off so you can reboard at the same location. This is wonderful way to see Boston or any city for that matter.
Positive experience: Had a great experience with this company in Boston. Uncle Steve and King Knight were awesome! Fun, entertaining, laugh out loud funny and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
Positive experience: We bought a two day pass. On day one. Waited 45 minutes at our first stop to get on. The drivers are entertaining and knowledgeable. The waits for the buses are not 15 minutes. More like a half of an hour which limits how much you can see in a day. At the end of day one we gave up waiting and walked a mile back to our hotel. Day two was even worse. We called ahead and we’re put thru to dispatch asking if stop 18 was active which the said yes. After a one hour wait we walked to stop 14 and waited there for another 20 minutes. We eventually made it to stop 3 and then to stop 5. We ended up taking the subway back towards our hotel and then walking the remainder. What little bit we were able to use the trolley was ok but it definitely is a slow way to get around. I would think at least 3 days would be needed to get to all the sights as a result.
Fantastic experience: It was amazing ! Totally recommend it!
Fantastic experience: We had a great experience. It was a great tour with knowledge and fun. We recognize 2 tour guides Rocky and Murph.
Fantastic experience: Townie the tour guide was an absolute delight. Knowledgeable on history and so funny! I recommend anyone interested in a Boston tour to take a tour with this gentleman! I hope he gets the credit he so well deserves! Thanks for making our day a great one Townie!!! - Shawn and Anne from Ontario
Negative experience: I thought the $60 fee was too high for what we got. We exited the bus at the Tea Party museum and, when finished there, attempted to renovate the bus. After waiting for more than 30 minutes in the cold wind, we ended up walking back to our hotel. Very disappointing we couldn’t complete the tour and see the remaining stops.
Negative experience: It was impossible to follow what the drivers were saying. The volume was too low, and they spoke too quickly. I would not recommend it for nonnative English speakers.
Fantastic experience: I really enjoyed Ms. Beantown's tour! She is funny, knowledgeable, and she engaged riders by asking us where we are from. It was delightful to see a bit of Boston!
Fantastic experience: Crafty was a great tour guide!
Positive experience: The tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. The trolley itself was pretty nice. Where they fell short was timing and over flowing issues. They stated 15-20min and we waited 30-45 with available seating. Couldn't imagine having to wait for a 2nd bus due to capacity issue. Maybe it's to advance, but a trolley tracker would be very helpful as people would be able to spend more time at stops without having to waste 30+mins at each stop
Fantastic experience: Crafty was a great tour guide. He had a wealth of knowledge and made the tour fun.
Fantastic experience: Townie is an AWESOME tour guide and trolley driver! We learned a lot from him and he is very personable! We felt blessed whenever we hopped on a trolley and saw Townie behind the wheel! What a treat! Our trip throughout Boston was special because of Townie! Thank you from "The Motor City Shakedown Couple"!
Negative experience: I purchased two tickets for the trolley tour. I called beforehand to find out the best way to get on the trolley from where we were staying since there is not an interactive map to see off your phone. (I highly recommend you guys investing in an interactive map for customers to follow like so many others have). I was advised it would be "around" 40 minutes until it was at Cheers (closest to us) which was no problem. It did arrive right at 40 minutes and we were at the light waiting to cross to board when it drove off. (This was on us due to my son forgetting something in the room and us not being early). So we ubered to the north side to grab lunch and hit the next stop. I called, I was told the approximate time they would be there and it either came extremely early or later.. Ubered to the USS Constitution and after walking around called and was told it would be roughly 30 minutes until the next trolley.. We began walking around outside a little more and in the far distance see the trolley stop for a minute and drive off less than 5 minutes after my call.. At this point I had spent in Uber's as much a 1 of the tickets, it was pouring rain and cold so I just gave up. I think the trolley idea is great but it is EXTREMELY unorganized..
Negative experience: Not worth it. Trolley took very long to arrive at each stop and sometimes arrived full and was unable to get on having to wait at least another 25 mins for next one. Was only able to ride four times in the whole day and spent at least 2 hours waiting in total waisting precious time. At one stop waited on the trolley over 20 mins before he would go so they could fill up. Last boarding was at only 4 pm. One stop waited 45 mins. After first trolley arrived 20 mins waiting it was full. I called and was told another would be there in 15 mins, finally arrived 25 mins later. For the price ($100 for 2 people), could’ve just did ride share and gotten places much faster. The drivers were very nice and informative but service is too slow and too few trolleys. Was given an apology but no offer for a discount after terrible wait times.
Fantastic experience: We were in Boston for only a day and wanted to see as much as possible. Our trolley driver was funny and told great stories. He was accommodating with directions and helpful with picture taking for those who were taking pics. All in all a very enjoyable time. I would recommend to anyone wanting to get a good overview of the sights of Boston.
Negative experience: Quite disappointing. Paid $55 a ticket, party of 4. The weather was rainy and overcast, which we thought it’d be a perfect time to be inside out of the rain. We got on a trolley bus to find the windows (or plastic covering, as I think the trolleys become window-less during the hot summers months) completely steamed up on the inside and the rain stuck to the outside of the plastic. Usually hate complaining about things that are totally out of the drivers control, but it just meant constantly wiping the windows, which didn’t stay clear for long - within 20 seconds would fog up again and would become hard to see outside. I can imagine perhaps on a different weather day, this may not be such an issue, however not being able to see what the driver was speaking about just seemed so pointless. I found the content to be, mediocre/average. We got off after about 5 stops and didn’t return. I’d love to try it out again if it happened to be different weather and if I was ever in Boston again. It was real pity to be honest. I’d highly suggest not going when the weather is cold and rainy. Seems pointless and waste of money.
Positive experience: The drivers were skilled and knew the area well but I didn't appreciate their unsolicited disparaging comments about the Pilgrims or Puritans. I was glad for a ride and some entertainment but didn't need their negative, disparaging opinions. 3 of 4 drivers made these comments, which makes me assume they are encouraged to do so. Not impressed with their biased opinions.
Fantastic experience: We had a very pleasant experience with Old Town Trolley Tours. Booking the tour over the phone was extremely easy, and the tour guides were very knowledgeable about the history of Boston.
Negative experience: Beware of these drivers when trying to parallel park your car because even if you have a blinker on and your reverse lights they will give you no room to back into a spot.
Negative experience: Don’t waste your money. We waiting over an hour and a half on all 3 of the first stops as every bud was full when they arrived. Each driver stated a bud was coming next that had room. Not once, not twice, but three times or more. We finally got in at stop 4 and choose not to get off until we returned back to the start. This company is all about asking tickets, not customer service.
Negative experience: Don't waste your money. Far too many people for too few trolleys. Waited over an hour at two stops and finally gave up. What a waste of money.
Fantastic experience: This is a convenient and comfortable way to see the main sights in Boston. We got on at the Marriott Copley place hotel and rode for over 2 hours without getting off. We did this on our last day in order to pass sometime before heading to airport. The driver was informative and the day was beautiful to take in the sights.
Fantastic experience: Great way to get around Boston. We were there during a heat wave so the plastic bus windows were tied up for an open-air experience. We rode two trolleys. Friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining drivers. Loved Hambone! It was sometimes hard to hear what the drivers were saying. I mean in regular traffic or when other passengers were in conversation, not when a loud truck was going by. Naturally it was impossible to hear what the driver was saying when a big truck was going by. Nothing to be done about that. Otherwise it was very enjoyable. Learned a lot of interesting tidbits about Boston that you wouldn't learn anywhere else.
Fantastic experience: This is the best way to see and learn about Boston’s keynote historical information and have easy “hop on, hop off” access to primary points of interest. FAMILY FRIENDLY!! Our boys (ages 3 & 5) loved the bus and energy from the driver. Every guide brings their own unique charisma and energy to keep everyone engaged - you WILL be engaged! Based on your own interests, you can easily plan a full day of touring and use this bus as your mode of transportation. Takes about 1.5 hrs to go around the circuit and buses come every 15-20 min. The bus even has tiered theatre-style seating, so everyone has a great view. Due to construction/destruction there might be slight route changes. You’ll love this for: - 1/4 day of activity OR use it all day as a bus to the primary points of interest around the city’s core. - Historical facts with a personal twist from every guide. - A likely key component to a 48/72 hr trip in Boston. - Entertaining break to recharge the biological batteries during a busy day of walking and touring
Negative experience: This tour was NOT worth the $50 cost. Trolleys are full when they begin at 9 am and it is very possible that you will have to wait to board one until a couple of trolleys have arrived that have available seating. Since the trolley's end at 5 pm I found that having to wait and waste time was annoying. There is also not an app to assist in finding the trolley stops, you will have to use a foldable map which is not at all convenient. The first trolley that I boarded went from stop 12 to stop 1 and then everyone was required to get off at stop 1. I was confused about this and when I asked the driver about it, he was very rude and condescending toward me. I was directed to board another trolley at stop 1 but since I had originally planned to go to stop 2 and was told it was about a 5 minute walk, I decided to walk. I ended up boarding the trolley only one more time for another short ride as I found it difficult to find the stops and became very discouraged about the whole thing at that point. I definitely would not use this trolley again and wish I had just stuck to walking. If you just want to take a tour without getting on/off at various stops then maybe this is a good idea but not for the purpose that is advertised.
Positive experience: We had heard such wonderful things about the Trolley Tour. We eagerly boarded at stop 14 close to where we parked. We went through stops 15, 16, 17, 18 without the driver saying one word. I was upset that we paid so much money for a glorified trolley ride. We went through Boston not using the trolley until a ride back to the car- then we had an amazing tour guide!! She chatted the whole time which is what we thought it was supposed to be! I am bummed we got a dud for the first driver that discouraged us from boarding the rest of the day as we definitely didn’t get our moneys worth. Lesson learned and hope someone else benefits from it
Negative experience: Nous l’avons pris à Boston.
Fantastic experience: What a great way to see the City when on a time constrained visit. Love the informative tour guides!
Fantastic experience: Great way to get around Boston! Did a 2 day tour and was able to jump on and off without trouble. Drivers were friendly and informative. Extra bonus they were super helpful with my 3 kids aged 8-2 and even had stroller storage in the trolley.
Fantastic experience: We came to Boston on a commuter train and had a hard time finding the trolley stop (18) to catch the trolley. Finally found it after talking to a backup trolley driver a few blocks away. Sure wish Boston would allow them to put up some kind of marker for us tourists. Once on the trolley, we learned there were two lines - the shuttle line we had boarded that stopped at hotels in the port area and the other line that toured Boston with narration. We finally got on that one. We hopped off early to visit Quincy Market for some breakfast and buy some souvenirs. Bagels and sweatshirts in hand we reboarded the trolley. All I can say is "Crafty", the driver, made our day. He had a great sense of humor and kept us all laughing. We stuck with him until the Boston Tea Party where we hopped off again and participated in throwing tea into the harbor. It was odd to hear arguments from the 1775 that sounded oddly familiar to today's political rhetoric. We boarded again and rode back to the first stop. We wanted to take the trolley back to the South Terminal to catch our train, but we wanted to walk over to Little Italy for Mike's Pastry and some dinner. The trolly stops picking up at stop 1 at 5:00 pm ... we realized that pastry and dinner was going to be past that deadline. We did have to make the 6:00 pm train. Dinner finished at 5:15 so I had to go to plan B and call an UBER. I would definitely recommend Old Town Trolley. Our experience was positive and all the drivers were entertaining ... even though "Crafty" wins our award for the best!
Fantastic experience: This was an excellent way to see Boston on a rainy day! We parked in the garage near stop 12 and caught the bus driven by Rocky. Rocky did a great job navigating the huge bus through very narrow busy streets while also giving a delightfully humorous narrative. We got off at stop 1 to explore the wharf and Quincy Market, and managed to get Rocky as our driver again (yay!) - at least until we got off at stop 3 to see the USS Constitution. From there we landed on John's bus and just rode around to stop 12, since we were tired and damp. I have since recommended this tour to several people and would definitely go on it again myself.
Positive experience: Gave a 3 star only because Steve’s trolley was so loud we strained to hear him this was mechanical not outside noise. We thoroughly enjoyed him and his extensive and humorous at times knowledge of the area. We could have spent tons of time with him learning sooo much. Please give Steve a better quieter trolley because he is a wealth of information and a very very good driver!!!!! So many could learn from his extensive knowledge. Thanks Uncle Steve!
Negative experience: A waste of money and time. It took at least 30 minutes between trolley's showing up at pickup stops. Then when the trolley showed up one driver wouldn't allow standing in the isles. Really, so now you have to wait for another trolley to pick you up? I'm sure the driver's narration was great, but who could hear him over loud obnoxious passengers. Narration was one reason we paid $160, for me and my wife to use the trolley. Yes, the driver's mentioned to everyone to keep the talking down, but when they did no one heard him. Hey Old Town Trolley why don't you have your driver's tell the passenger's to keep it down before the trolley rolls. Maybe face the passengers and emphasize this point. Maybe post signs in the trolley that say respect the other passenger's. I did see another tour company had a driver and a narrator who faced the passenger's. Maybe upgrade the speaker system on the trolley. I don't know just improve on your service. Look if time isn't important to you and you are not interested in what the driver has to share and money is no object then this is the place for you. For us all those things are important and Old Town Trolley has a lot of room to improve.
Fantastic experience: The trolleys were clean and the drivers knowledgeable. We had 5 hours to see Boston and it was the perfect way to tour your city. We had to chase down a trolley to the next stop because we thought we were waiting at #18 stop. I would recommend a trolley sign or clearer description of specific actual pick up stops.
Positive experience: The tour was long, a bit to much chat, PA system was to low so couldn't really hear what was being said, buses were packed and had to miss 2 as too busy to get on. Worth the money but needs better organisation when boarding, maybe a bit less chat.
Fantastic experience: Entertaining and informational drivers. If my history teacher had this much enthusiasm I might have enjoyed history. The tour hits all the high spots. It's a perfect way to get around for a couple of days.
Fantastic experience: This is the way to see Boston! Very easy to use, takes you to the best sites, and the drivers are very informative.
Fantastic experience: Excellent tour, one of the best. So much history and very knowledgeable and humorous drivers. A real treat! The two-day tickets is a must!
Fantastic experience: Great way to see the city and to just plain get around during the day.
Fantastic experience: We really enjoyed this tour. Highly recommended.
Positive experience: Too expensive for what is offered. It was better if instead the driver speaking non-stop, it was provided a recorded track for each city stop. Driver audio was very bad. Plastic window covers blocks most of the view. Traffic is a huge downside in some points and it becomes impossible to take advantage of all 14 stops in one single day pass. Overall I don’t recommend.
Positive experience: My wife and I are new to Boston and had never been on a trolley tour. My daughter who lives here suggested that we take the entire Tour all the way around so we could see if there was anything that we actually wanted to visit later that day or on the next day. We started the tour after a subway ride to Beacon Hill. We were fortunate and have fair weather and sunny skies. At Beacon Hill on the west side is the golden dome State House and the trolley pick up is an inconspicuous sign on the opposite side of the street. While the trolley touts a 15 to 20 minute interval you can occasionally expect 30 minutes to an hour depending upon traffic. We enjoyed several different drivers that had varying degrees of humor and historical knowledge. We both found the driving tour to be enjoyable. We recommend anyone coming to Boston give this to her a try, to see some sites and to get a better idea of what you might like to spend time getting a more thorough visit to. We ended up following the Freedom Trail around the historic part of downtown, spent time in the open markets and on the wharf and spent some time in the beautiful parks and local shops. We ended up with a good many photographs of historical items and images of architecture. We would definitely consider utilizing this trolley or another when coming back to Boston
Fantastic experience: Well worth the money. Very informative, and both drivers we had were entertaining
Positive experience: Really enjoyed the tour. Unfortunately it was a bit too cool to have the windows open. Our tour guide JD was excellent.
Positive experience: If you go without any knowledge of the city, you can get a taste. I discover very nice places thanks to the tour. The time at which the bus pass at any point is unpredictable. Once the bus was full and I had to wait 30 minutes to the next one. This happens also to other customers later. For that price, they could have an app with a map indicating where are the buses, a waiting time estimation, and if there is room. The drivers are very informative and know a lot about the city, but one of them spend too much time complaining about the traffic.
Negative experience: Not worth the money and drivers have a bad habit of leaving you, even if they see you coming.
Fantastic experience: Visiting in the month of July, great way to see Boston when you only have a day or so!
Positive experience: I enjoyed the little bit that I experienced on my tour. My small group of 3 decided to take the ride after our morning classes at our conference. We purchased tickets online and jumped on right at our hotel. We were never informed that the trolley was shutting down an hour early that day until we made it from our stop about 4 stops later to stop one where we had to exit the trolley and get back on to start the trip. It was lunch time so we decided to have lunch on the waterfront. By them time we finished lunch, and waited a few minutes to board a trolley, which is when we learned this was the last trip of the day, that we realized we weren't even going to make the full loop. We didn't get to experience any of the city as we hoped off the exit before our hotel and did atleast see Trinity church and the library and then had to walk back to our hotel. I have utilized this company before in many cities so I am familiar with their service but was disappointed with my Boston adventure as we missed seeing some amazing sites due to failure to communicate properly.
Fantastic experience: Captain Matty is THE BEST. Had a Great time on the tour. Saw a lot of Boston's history and had fun doing it. Highly Recommend the Hop on/Hop Off guys.
Fantastic experience: Awesome way to learn about the city and get around. Murphy and Fox Trot were amazing.
Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed the tour, our guide J was amazing. She made it really fun and entertaining for our entire family. Would absolutely recommend.
Fantastic experience: Loved Old Town Trolley Tours! All the guides were amazing and very talented! My last guide for the evening was amazing! He even took me to my hotel which was was at the Southport stop (that wasn’t on his route for the evening). I cannot say enough good things about this Trolley tour. I saw the whole city in a day too! It was amazing!
Fantastic experience: We had a great time on the Old Town Trolley tour. Our guide, Matty, was very engaging and we thoroughly enjoyed the tour with all the information and stories he shared with us. Keep up the good work!
Negative experience: Rode 3 trolleys with the opportunity to hop on and off. 2 of 3 had plastic windows clouded and scratched. It was too cold to open the windows so this meant we couldn’t see things clearly and photos were out of the question. 2 of 3 drivers talked so fast and in a monotone that I, a native English speaker couldn’t always follow what they were pointing out. Overall the tour needed to be higher quality to justify both the time it took and the price.
Fantastic experience: Very informative tour and great way to see Boston. It is a great city with very friendly people
Fantastic experience: Great way to learn about Boston in less than 2 hours! You can then use the buss to move in town. JD was great to tell us different stories about the town.
Positive experience: I enjoyed the tour, a very informative and comfortable way to travel when it was raining and cold. I wish they stayed open later but I understand it's a business and they set their hours. Overall very happy
Fantastic experience: My husband and I went from DC, NYC, then drove all the northeastern states for our bucket list (4 day trip). We were going to fly out of Logan airport at the break of dawn the last day, so we spent the afternoon prior in Boston. Parked near the USS Constitution, walked part of the Freedom Trail to Bunker Hill and back and did the trolley tour through the rest of the way just to see what was in Boston because we really didn’t have many ideas (and exhausted from walking DC and NYC just days before). We never hopped off until the end, but our guide Ghost was a lot of fun telling us all about the city, had a few good jokes and stories so he made it entertaining. A couple of stops had more people than he could hold but he made sure someone knew there were more people waiting. All in all, I’m glad we did this because it was a way for us to see the city and learn about somewhere we’d likely never travel to again (we prefer warmer weather).
Positive experience: Originally we had a great Trolley driver & were enjoying the tour, but then we were made to transfer to another trolley that was 3 seats short of fully occupied. New driver told silly, made-up stories & allowed a family of 5 onto the already packed trolley so that 2 of them had to sit on the others' laps, which crowded us uncomfortably for the entire tour.
Positive experience: Drivers were very knowledgeable, but we wished we had a more exact time the buses would be at the stops. An app showing the buses would be nice.
Fantastic experience: This was a great way to get an overview of Boston. Hop on and off plus you get to enjoy the narration and some humor from the drivers.
Negative experience: I didn't feel it was worth it. The trolleys arrive at stops every 20 minutes. But if they are full, you have to wait another 20 minutes for the next ride. We ended up waiting 40 minutes at one stop. Everything downtown is pretty close, so it would have made more sense to just walk around downtown on your own rather than stand at these stops, and then Uber to anything that is too far to walk. Now we know for next time.
Positive experience: This was a pretty good tour and we enjoyed it a lot. There were a good number of stops and the live narration was helpful and interesting. We really enjoyed all of the drivers. They kept it fun and interesting. I do wish all the buses were accessible and that there was an app so you could keep better track of when a bus/trolley would come around. They supposedly came around every 20 minutes but that wasn't consistent (I'm sure because of traffic and other unforeseen issues).
Positive experience: I didn’t have enough time and energy to walk through the old town of Boston, so I chose to take a rough tour via the trolley. I didn’t get off the car since it was raining and cold. The driver, Mr. Bailey(I hope I remember his name correctly), introduced the old town to us with his passion. I really appreciate his hard work. The gentleman working in the booth at Long Wharf was also nice. Overall, it’s a good experience.
Negative experience: Poor planning when you reserve a spot for the day. You should always have a seat if you pay that much for 4 people for one day. Not a great value if you have to wait for another bus and it doesn't come. Then you see buses stacked and you miss it and then you wait again. Tour guides were nice and pretty good.
Fantastic experience: We absolutely loved the tours and the drivers. We were there 10/30 Sunday and the drivers were amazing. I wore my NY Yankees shirt (brave to do so in Boston. LOL) and the drivers and I had a great time about it. Beanie even gave me a "Trolley Token" for my bravery. LOL! We highly recommend Old Town Trolley Tours!
Fantastic experience: The history provided by Capt. Matty was great ! He was an excellent tour guide! Fun and funny! Great way to see Boston! He’s a keeper!
Positive experience: The tour was fine and guides are good, buses are clean. It's worth the money. However, if you are disabled with a medium or large service dog be aware the trolleys are very narrow and the dogs do not fit well tucked. My labrador can fit tucked under an airplane seat but did not fit on these buses. He couldn't even stand between my seat and the seat in front of me, his shoulders/chest were wider than the space! He ended up riding in the aisle, which is not proper SD etiquette but it was our only option. There was another SD labrador team we ran into on one of the trolley rides that had the same problems. It's not horrible/awful against the company, it's just very limited in the accessibility to be aware of. Smaller SD teams will be fine, we ran into a few that were held in their handlers' laps. They do ask the 2 ADA allowed questions before boarding, which I do appreciate! A wheelchair or other larger medical equipment would also have a very difficult time fitting.
Negative experience: Good and bad on this tour. The guides were great and the information very interesting. But the busses were way over-sold and there were too many people trying to get on than they had seats for. So sometimes you would wait 20 minutes for a bus only to find out there were only a few seats available. We ended up staying on and riding through only because we were afraid to get off for fear of taking so long to get back on. They really need to limit the number of tickets sold.
Fantastic experience: We sure learned a lot about Boston. Papa Jim was very informative and entertaining. Well worth the time and money.
