Skagway is a charming town that stands out as a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Alaska. With its rich history rooted in the Klondike Gold Rush, this picturesque port town used to have a bustling population of 20,000 residents, now mirrored by the daily influx of tourists.

Known for its breathtaking scenery and friendly locals, visitors often rave about their experiences:

  • Amazing historic sites: Skagway is home to many historical buildings, including the famous White Pass and Yukon Route railroad, a delightful ride that showcases the area's mining heritage.
  • Vibrant atmosphere: The town offers a plethora of activities for families, from scenic train rides to captivating tours, such as the Red Onion Bar and Brothel tour.
  • Natural beauty: Surrounded by stunning snow-capped mountains and majestic landscapes, Skagway provides a visual feast for nature lovers.
  • Warm hospitality: Visitors consistently highlight the friendly demeanor of the locals and the high quality of service found at various establishments.

While Skagway can be quite small and may feel overly commercial at times, its unique charm and the multitude of experiences it offers surely make it a standout on any Alaskan itinerary. Whether it’s enjoying the local cuisine or diving into its vibrant history, a trip to Skagway creates lasting memories.

Positive experience: Klondike Gold Rush times are still evident when this place used to have 20,000 residents, replaced today by about the same amount of daily tourists

Fantastic experience: Amazing. No trip to Alaska is complete without a visit to Skagway. Skagway has a population of just over a thousand in winter, but in summer it copes with more than 1,000,000 visitors each year. The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the business of Skagway. No viit to Skagway is complete without a trip on The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months. The Red Onion Bar and Brothel tour is also a must. You can see an intro to Skagway's famous Red Onion Bar Brothel tour, but if you want the real thing- you will have to visit Skagway yourself. Skagway is also part of the setting for Jack London's book The Call of the Wild, Will Hobbs's book Jason's Gold, and for Joe Haldeman's novel, Guardian. The John Wayne film North to Alaska (1960) was filmed nearby. The name Skagway is derived from shԍagéi, a Tlingit idiom which figuratively refers to rough seas in the Taiya Inlet, which are caused by strong north winds

Fantastic experience: My favorite place in the world. If you're going on an Alaskan cruise, make sure you indulge in Skagway. It was mine and my fiancé's favorite stop. We decided against doing excursions and had more fun than our family members that rode the train, etc. We went to the Jewell Gardens--a must see in Skagway. We're making the trip back next summer to get married there. Also, visit the Gold Rush Cementry and the trail to the waterfall. It was a very memorable experience. My fiancé and I want to live there one day.
