Skagway: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Best town we visited on our cruise.
Positive experience: Klondike Gold Rush times are still evident when this place used to have 20,000 residents, replaced today by about the same amount of daily tourists
Fantastic experience: Amazing. No trip to Alaska is complete without a visit to Skagway. Skagway has a population of just over a thousand in winter, but in summer it copes with more than 1,000,000 visitors each year. The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the business of Skagway. No viit to Skagway is complete without a trip on The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months. The Red Onion Bar and Brothel tour is also a must. You can see an intro to Skagway's famous Red Onion Bar Brothel tour, but if you want the real thing- you will have to visit Skagway yourself. Skagway is also part of the setting for Jack London's book The Call of the Wild, Will Hobbs's book Jason's Gold, and for Joe Haldeman's novel, Guardian. The John Wayne film North to Alaska (1960) was filmed nearby. The name Skagway is derived from shԍagéi, a Tlingit idiom which figuratively refers to rough seas in the Taiya Inlet, which are caused by strong north winds

Fantastic experience: My favorite place in the world. If you're going on an Alaskan cruise, make sure you indulge in Skagway. It was mine and my fiancé's favorite stop. We decided against doing excursions and had more fun than our family members that rode the train, etc. We went to the Jewell Gardens--a must see in Skagway. We're making the trip back next summer to get married there. Also, visit the Gold Rush Cementry and the trail to the waterfall. It was a very memorable experience. My fiancé and I want to live there one day.
